DAWN BIRD

[First to see at Easter]

Only a little bird stirred in the garden,
Drowsily scanning the grey dawning light.
The soldiers were sleeping, their idle watch keeping:
The stone was rolled shut and the tomb was closed tight.

Only the little bird saw the light growing:
Not of this world was the radiance he saw.
Angels, white robed, the stone aside throwing,
Only the little bird watching in awe.

Only the little bird greeted the Risen One,
His anthem of joy as his small wings unfurled
Pealed through the brightened dawn, lit by the rising sun:
The little bird sang to the Light of the World.
